I struggle

Every morning, when I wake up, I struggle.

Sometimes, I struggle physically. On days when my body doesn’t agree with me, when my body aches or my muscles are stiff, staying immobile in bed feels like a better proposition than getting up. Even getting out of bed and standing up feels like an ordeal.

Sometimes, I struggle mentally. When I open my eyes my mind seems surprised by my continued existence, and seems to struggle to find out what I am doing here, alive and awake. I struggle to remember all the goals and dreams that seemed so clear yesterday.

Sometimes, I struggle emotionally. I wonder why this isn’t easier, and why I don’t get a immediate burst of joy when I wake up. Why does it have to be so hard?

But I get up anyway.

Trust Your Struggle by Zain Asher at TEDxEuston

A TED Talk A Day, Day 3: Zain Asher is a CNN news anchor, who worked her way up from being a receptionist. She’s understandably smooth speaker given her work, but also makes some heartfelt points from experience, which is wonderful. Incidentally her brother is Chiwetel Ejiofor of 12 Years A Slave fame!

  1. Her mother said that to make it in life, you have to be able to related to everybody.
  2. Trust your struggle: No matter what your hardship, have faith that it will be for the greater good.
  3. Turn a blind eye to competition: Don’t compete for what you want, create it. To be successful you don’t have to take anything away from anyone else. Competition only brings up fears.
  4. Give:The more you give, the more your receive.
  5. Success comes when opportunity meets preparation: Prepare for where you want to be, so when it comes, you are ready.

Suggested action step: Every time I worry about whether I can be certain of a positive outcome from my actions, I will remind myself that as long as I believe in doing them, my actions are preparations for future opportunities, even if I can’t see them yet.
